2014 High School Solo Competition

March 20-22, 2014 – Urbana-Champaign, Illinois

The 1st Prize winner will be featured on a winner’s recital at the 2014 NASA Biennial Conference.

I. Eligibility

  1. Contestants must be between 15-18 years of age on March 23, 2014.
  2. All contestants must NOT be enrolled full-time in a college, university or other post-secondary school.
  3. All contestants must be current members of the North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) as of March 19, 2014.
  4. Contestants who are not current members of NASA must join online at: (Student membership rate: $25 for 1 year.)

II. Application Guidelines

  1. All application materials must be submitted online. Submit your competition application materials here (you must a current NASA member and logged into your account). The deadline for submission of applications, recordings and fees is: DECEMBER 15, 2013.
  2. Contestants must submit an entry fee of $30. All payments must be made through the online application by December 15, 2013.
  3. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  4. The contestant’s birth date must be verified at the competition site with the contestant’s driver’s license, birth certificate, or passport. Any contestant who does not show proof of age, or is younger than 15 or older than 18 years of age as of March 23, 2014, will be disqualified.
  5. There are two rounds of the NASA High School Solo Competition: a recorded Preliminary Round and a live Final Round. The deadline for the recorded Preliminary Round is December 15, 2011. The live Final Round will be held in Urbana-Champaign, IL on March 20, 2014.

III. Preliminary Round

  • The preliminary round will consist of a recorded audition. The recording must be UNEDITED, and must be submitted with the initial application materials by the deadline, December 15, 2013. Recordings must be submitted in MP3 format. The recording should contain performances of three movements, performed with live piano accompaniment as indicated below. Digital versions of piano accompaniments such as smart music or music-minus-one play-a-long formats are not acceptable.
    1. Tableaux de Provence – Paule Maurice (pub. Editions Henry Lemoine)
      I. Farandole des Jeunes Filles (REQUIRED)
      IV. Des Alyscamps L’âme Soupire (REQUIRED)
    2. Choose ONE of the remaining 2 movements:
      III. La Bohémienne
      V. Le Cabridan
  • Judges: Sheri Brown, Ed Fraedrich, and Michael Hester

IV. Final Round

  • Up to 12 saxophonists will be invited to perform in the final round. The Finals will be held on March 20, 2014 on the campus of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, in conjunction with the 2014 North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference. Each finalist will be required to play two pieces as follows:
    1. Sonata, Opus 19 – Paul Creston: I. With Vigor and II. With Tranquility
    2. Up to 12 minutes of music of the performer’s choice. This music may be composed for any saxophone (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone) and be either unaccompanied or with piano accompaniment. All finalists must provide one original copy of the score(s). All works with piano must be performed with piano. If the chosen work(s) exceeds 12 minutes, the adjudicators will stop the performer after 12 minutes of performance. Tableaux de Provence by Paule Maurice may NOT be used in this round.

V. General Guidelines

  1. The Winners Recital will feature the First Place Prizewinner in the High School Solo Competition and will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 during the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference in Urbana-Champaign, IL.
  2. Eligible contestants may also enter the High School Jazz Saxophone Performance Competition and the Saxophone Quartet Competition, but they must submit a separate application and separate entry fee for each category entered.
  3. All fees and dues are non-refundable.
  4. All expenses, including lodging and transportation to and from the competition, are the sole responsibility of the contestants.
  5. A minimum of 15 entries is required to hold this competition. Entry fees will be refunded if the competition is cancelled.
  6. A collaborative pianist will be available for the invited live round finalists. The pianist’s fee and other details will be made available in August 2013 when the application website becomes available. You must be available on site to rehearse on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 if you request a competition pianist.
  7. Professional musicians will judge both the preliminary audition recordings and the live round performances. Finalists will be evaluated solely on their live round performance.
